My Teacher on a Postcard competition and exhibition

The deadline for entries to the My Teacher on a Postcard competition is Friday 13 September. There will be a public vote for the shortlisted entries from the Teacher on a Postcard competition. We will let you know when voting opens and would ask for your support in promoting the public vote far and wide to your parents, staff, community and beyond. It will be a fairly short voting period – probably about ten days. The winners will be announced at the Teach Portsmouth Awards evening.

The Teacher on a Postcard Exhibition will take place at HIVE on the lower ground floor of Portsmouth Central Library on the Tuesday 29th, Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st of October from 9.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to visit. Please promote this in your newsletters and on your website.

Portsmouth School Experience Programme – funding available for schools

At the beginning of September we will be launching the first of our campaigns to encourage people to consider teaching in Portsmouth. The campaign will include the invitation to prospective teachers to register to gain school experience in a Portsmouth school.
We are therefore looking for host schools to take prospective teachers over the course of the 2019/20 school year, probably over 2-3 days, and allow them to:
– Sit in on a variety of lessons, working with pupils under the guidance of the teacher;
– Receive advice from the Head or CPD lead on routes into teaching;
– Talk to a newly or recently qualified teacher in the school about their experience.
We hope to be able to secure some funding from the Portsmouth Education Elementary Fund to contribute to the administrative costs to schools of providing quality school experiences which could be up to £1500 for a school (or group of schools) able to take up to 10 prospective teachers over the course of the year. www.teachportsmouth.co.uk
To express an initial interest in taking part please contact [email protected] by Tuesday 25 June.

Mayfield Public Information Event

There will be a drop-in Public Information Event hosted by building contractor Kier, at Mayfield School in Portsmouth on Wednesday 15th May from 3.30pm – 7.30pm, where the architectural plans for the new purpose-built school building can be seen.

The re-build of the Mayfield School is a government project which is led by the Department for Education (DfE) and is a centrally funded project under the Priority Schools Building Programme.

Throughout the session, you will be able to talk to representatives from Kier, the DfE, Portsmouth City Council and the school, and the outline timescales for the planning application process will be explained.

The council, Mayfield Staff and Governors have all worked very hard over recent years to create an ‘all through’ school which benefits children and the community. This is an exciting development which offers a purpose-built, state of the art, educational environment. There will be new teaching and recreational facilities for the school and the new school building will benefit the pupils, staff and the local community.

Portsmouth Cultural Expo 2019

Teachers are invited to attend the Portsmouth Cultural Expo on Monday 18 March, 4-6pm at the D-Day Story Museum. It’s an opportunity for teachers to meet and have conversations with cultural and literacy organisations from across the city and learn how they can support and enhance teaching in heritage and culture. The expo will also serve as a launch for the popular Summer Reading Challenge – come along to hear how the Library Service are planning to increase participation amongst children on pupil premium or forces premium.

Exhibitors include Aspex Gallery, the New Theatre Royal, National Heritage, the Mary Rose Trust, Top Banana Circus, Groundlings, Funk Format and the Portsmouth Music Service, with more signing up each day.

Free refreshments, courtesy of the museum café, will be available to enjoy and at 6pm attendees will be welcome to join an optional tour of the newly refurbished D-Day Story Museum and see why it was nominated for this year’s prestigious European Museum of the Year award.
